The last couple of years has been quite convulsed in what to celebrate video games related (and also in what is not, why are we going to fool ourselves). The Summer Games Done Quick of 2022, the summer edition of the Benual Benal Marathon dedicated to the world of speedrunning, is especially interesting because it marks the return of the event to the face-to-face format, after several editions celebrating exclusively online, due to pandemic problems. In a gesture of intelligence and after an AGDQ 2022-the edition that is celebrated at the beginning of the year-still completely online, the organization has opted for a hybrid format for the event this summer, with both face-to-face and remote games that have been allowed to take advantage of the infrastructure developed during this section of exclusively digital events to incorporate participants from all time slots and even more diversify the retransmitted games template.
The enthusiasm for having recovered its traditional format could be appreciated from the beginning, with a game of Shadow of the Colossus in time Attack in which the colossi were chosen randomly by a fun giant given. This type of gimmicks and unorthodox games were seen relatively frequent-UPS_ possible, and that forced participants to use the weakest version of Simon's whip. Or this one of Kirby Tilt ‘N’ Tumble , one of the lespin-offs_ less known of the pink ball whose peculiarity lies in the fact that it is controlled by gyroscope. Originally launched for Gameboy Color, the game is impossible to capture in its original hardware... unless the cartridge is connected to a Gamecube (with a super nintendo command attached on top), which is exactly how this speedrun Runner turning and manipulating the live console itself to complete the game.
The usual suspects of this type of event, such as Mega Man, Sonic or Final Fantasy A frankly interesting selection of cuts a little deeper in the form of less known titles, such as Super, such as Bonk , the sequel to Super Nintendo of the pet that popularized the PC-Engine or McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure , the unclassifiable and incomprehensible platform Radiant Silvergun . Or this other of Bulk Slash , the arcade of Sega Saturn that recently became news when receiving one of the most ambitious fan-translations to date made by the community, which tells, among other things, with a dubbing full to English.
Speaking precisely of this, another of the alidized points of the event was precisely that of the games dedicated to visible the culture of Romhacking and the modifications made by fans. There was a place for hacks more traditional, such as Celeste.smc , a total modification of Super Mario World in which tribute to the central themes and mechanics of Maddy Thorson's game; or also this incredibly tense run of Super Metroid Kaizo , a version of Super Metroid inspired by the philosophy of the hacks niche of Super Mario characterized by its extremely high difficulty, with limited lives, a single tank of Life for the entire game and a redesigned map from scratch to contain as many playable fascism as possible.
The randomizers were also very present, both in traditional games and in others completely sui-generis, such as this evolution chaos of Pokemon Esmeralda to six hands, in which every time a Pokémon rose from level it evolved completely randomly, and that demanded tremendous flexibility and adaptation capacity to overcome the game within the estimated time. Equally interesting was also this cooperative challenge between Spikevegeta and Nukkular_reaction, where both played the same randomized version of Ocarina of Time and had to share information and plan the order in which they were going to face the game to complete it in time.
It was precisely Ocarina of Time who starred in my favorite moment of the entire event, through this demonstration of content eliminated from the game. It uses a technique called Ace (acronym for Arbitrary Code Execution), which has become relevant in recent years because it is currently completing Ocarina of Time faster. The oil consists of using a series of bugs present in Ocarina to manipulate the memory of the console injecting junk code, causing us to teleport us directly at the end of the game. Although the oil technically allows to manipulate the live code, the necessary inputs are so precise that it is practically impossible for a normal person to send information consistent enough to the console. However, helped by a bot capable of making those inputs, those responsible for this demonstration manage It consists of anything but clicking buttons incredibly precisely.
This exhibition perfectly encapsulates the value of the event as a whole and the GDQ in general, serving as showcase of the absolutely rich and diverse that can become a culture of the video game that, often, costs to dissociate from the brands, the corporations and its mercantile trends. Over the GDQ years it has become one of the greatest exponents of this type of event, doing a fantastic job not only when claiming and claiming the culture of the video game from the point of view of its fans, but also to make vulnerable groups such as LGBTI+, showing a tangible commitment to create an atmosphere as inclusive and transverse as possible.
Of course, there was also room for more conventional games but not less interesting. Among them, I personally highlight those of doom in 100% nightmare, Jedi Outcast Any% and that of the magnificent Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze .
The event was closed with $ 3,021,970 collected for doctors without borders, the organization with which you work in the summer edition of the event, resulting in the fourth time that the charity event manages to break the barrier of the three million collected. In total and cumulatively, the GDQ has managed to raise more than 40 million dollars for different NGOs and beneficial associations since it began to be held in 2010. As for the next appoint of the event dedicated to visible women who are dedicated to the world of speedruning, in the week of August 21 to 27.
